  1. that was the point of the joke. if we knew what sort of life the gods would endorse if there were any then we could just do that. The writer here seems confident that the detour through gods is clarifying the situation when in fact it is clarifying nothing.

    • It is misquote of the Euthyphro. Socrates considers whether what is just is pleasing to the gods because it is just, or if just simply is whatever happens to be pleasing to the gods. He does not consider the possibility that there are no gods.
